This weekend’s DIY project was inspired by that old motto, “It’s always better to be prepared than to be late for dinner.” Or was it, “It’s always darkest just before you turn on the lights.” Either way, being prepared before the lights go out is a good idea. When it comes to your Mac, that includes having a copy of the Recovery HD on an external device.

Why, I hear you asking, do I need another copy of the Recovery HD? Because Apple places the Recovery HD on the same drive as your startup drive, which can lead to this annoying problem: Your startup drive stops working, so you need to use the Recovery HD volume to reinstall the OS, but you can’t access the Recovery HD volume because it’s on the same drive that stopped working.
