There are certain signs that summer is in full force: 4th of July fireworks and cookouts, fireflies in the meadow, afternoon thunderstorms, and Apple’s annual back-to-school sale.

Apple has been offering a back-to-school promotion for a long time, with different come-ons through the years. I can remember free printers and a free iPod touch. But recently, Apple has pretty much settled on providing Apple Store gift cards, and this year, the offering is more of the same: $50 or $100 gift cards, depending on which product you purchase during the promotion.
